2D Art Generalist (Contract) - Surco Games
- Duration: ~4 months (Oct 1, 2025 to Jan 30, 2026)
- Compensation: $60/hr, up to 320 hours
- Location: Remote (US-based preferred for payment and logistics)
Role
We’re looking for a 2D Art Generalist to help ship a vertical slice of Last Call, a sci-fi bartending sim. The goal is to take a core idea, shape it into its most engaging form, and distill that vision into a 10-minute slice that captures the fun and shows what the full game could become.
You’ll own the art pipeline end to end, including concepting, production, integration, and polish. That means juggling characters, props, environments, UI, shaders, and VFX, but also knowing when to scale back, kitbash, or redirect effort. This role is all about collaboration and influence. You’ll sit at the table with design and engineering, shaping the slice’s look and feel, and making calls that affect story, music, and player experience.
Responsibilities
- Define a compact, achievable art style and drive visual consistency across the slice
- Build integration-ready assets for engine use including characters, props, and environments
- Create targeted lightweight animations (idles, emotes, FX cues) to sell feedback without overproduction
- Optimize assets for performance and prepare them for engine use (naming, shaders)
- Collaborate with design and UI/UX on menu skins, iconography, and visual feedback
- Call scope cuts early, focusing effort on high-impact assets and proposing kitbashing or asset-pack solutions where appropriate
- Deliver pitch-ready visuals for reels, screenshots, key art, and presentation materials
Ideal profile
- You have shipped a small project or vertical slice as the primary artist
- You can move quickly from sketch or block-out to final art without a long concept pipeline
- You balance speed and polish, knowing where to push quality and where to economize
- You’ve worked directly in-engine (Unity or Godot), with version control and import settings
- You’re energized by shaping the look and tone of a project, not just executing tasks
