We are building a stylized anime action RPG in Unreal Engine (PC + Mobile, crossplay). For a 15 minute Gamescom demo (target: August), we are setting up a compact cinematics pipeline. We are looking for a Remote Cinematic Director (Freelance) who can define a clear cinematic language, elevate key moments emotionally, and guide a small team through a practical, engine driven workflow.
You will work closely with Narrative Design, Game Design, Art Direction, and our Cinematics team. The focus is in engine cinematics (Level Sequence, Sequencer), with optional hybrid formats (motion manga panels) for efficient storytelling.

Your mission
Translate our narrative script into emotionally impactful, gameplay adjacent cinematics that carry the tone of our IP.
Define a consistent cinematic language (camera, editing, rhythm, intensity, style) across all sequences.
Reduce production risk through clear decisions, strong deliverables, and fast review loops.

Responsibilities
Preproduction
  • Script breakdown: beats, emotional arc, scope, risks, prioritization.
  • Define the sequence strategy: which scenes are full cinematics, which are hybrid, which are gameplay driven.
  • Create shot lists, timing targets, references, mood, and camera rules.
  • Brief and supervise the Storyboard Artist.
Production
  • Creative leadership for camera, blocking, pacing, acting, and cut decisions.
  • Ongoing reviews with Lead Animator, Animators, Tech Artist, VFX and Lighting (if staffed).
  • Ownership of style decisions and iteration control, including scope control.
  • Collaborate with Engineering on integration into gameplay flow (triggers, state, gameplay handover).
Finalization
  • Final approval of sequences: rhythm, emotion, readability, consistency.
  • Support polish (timing, transitions, shot refinement).
  • Define and enforce acceptance criteria.
