ProbablyMonsters is looking for a creative, technical, and collaborative Engineering Director. You will join a team concentrated on building new game concepts and worlds centered around a focused player experience. As part of the Incubation team, you’ll have the freedom to create, experiment, and try new game ideas while forming new franchises and development teams. Everyone on the Incubation team is enthusiastic about helping to shape a culture of collaboration and trust while creating best-in-class games.       

WHO YOU ARE:       

  • An experienced software engineer and leader who can establish technical direction, engineering roadmap, and oversee the development of systems and features of a project in development in the Unreal Engine.
  • A collaborative partner who can work closely with the project's core leadership team to understand, align on, and champion project goals.
  • Capable of managing and mentoring a small engineering team of specialists (gameplay, AI, networking, performance, etc.) to iterate towards project direction to achieve technical excellence, support report growth, and maintain healthy work/life balance.
  • Someone who can drive engineering collaboration with other disciplines (design, art, and production) to ensure that the technical features meet project quality standards, are delivered on time, and within the project budget.
  • Can work with external development partners to guide, evaluate tech proposals, and ensure their deliveries meet project technical standards and goals.
  • You’re someone who loves games and making them.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:       

  • Establish clear and focused coding standards for engineering team and disciplines.
  • Anticipates problem areas and develops preventative solutions for highly complex game development challenges.
  • Manage technical risks and communicate issues to team leadership.
  • Work closely with the engineering leads of central engineering teams, ensuring that the project areas are well supported in deliverables.
  • Direct the Implementation of complex features and systems (e.g. stat system, game modes, player abilities, publishing tool, sandbox features, online service, audio features, etc.)
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships key technology partners, and keep up-to-date with the latest industry trends and emerging technologies.
  • Mentor the engineering group to support performance management and career development.
  • Provide regular feedback to reports and project management to ensure team is performing in a positive direction.
  • Own and facilitate the development of features through leveraging team members individual strengths and contribute by taking on projects where necessary.
  • Establish internal engineering department and cross department syncs with project directors.
  • Establish regular engineering one-on-ones with reports and partners for alignment and guidance.
  • Oversee the collaboration with external development partners and allocation of game developers to support game initiatives.
  • Support individuals' craft growth, and maintaining a healthy team environment.
  • Responsible for the technical direction, roadmap, and decisions within game studio and organization (e.g. gameplay, systems, UI, etc.)
  • Align project engineering roadmap to project milestones.
  • Create objective lists to drive prioritization and negotiation of a collaborative, cross-functional milestone plan.
  • Direct and oversees decisions around the development of systems and features across all phases of development.
  • Responsible for projects being delivered on time, within budget and to quality standards.
  • Ensure that there is an effective engineering organization in place before teams move to production stage.
  • Establish engineering internal and external development pipelines and processes.
  • Develop and implement game development best practices and processes to ensure consistent, high-quality delivery of game features and systems.
  • Manage engineering group communication across many disciplines within project development.
  • Collaborate with other departments to develop game features and systems that meets creative objectives.
  • Directs and develops methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people.
  • Collaborate with production team on risk mitigation plans and scheduling.
  • Ensures effective and efficient communication between teams at various stages of product development. 
QUALIFICATIONS:        

  • Extensive previous experience working professionally with the Unreal Engine and Multiplayer titles.
  • Deep and fluent understanding of Unreal Engine content creation workflows including blueprint & scripting languages, or any other toolset related to the given discipline of game development.
  • Mastery understanding of authoring a clean, concise, maintainable and scalable code base.
  • Able to manage engineers at multiple skill levels and backgrounds while growing their talent.
  • Able to manage and lead discussions around technical limitations, scope, and scheduling.
  • Ability to rally a team in a positive direction.
  • Ability to direct department/function vision and objectives within game development.
  • Able to direct day-to-day projects and end-to-end assignments to broader group utilizing engineering best practices, independent judgement, individual skills, and formulate a technical vision.
  • Ability to drive innovation and technical excellence in game development.
  • Strong ability to enhance internal/external working relationships and work cross functionally with other departments.
  • Strong ability to communicate your ideas and expand on other’s ideas.
PREFERRED SKILLS:        

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • 10 or more years of related or equivalent engineering experience.
  • 5 or more years of management experience within AAA Games; preferably leading groups in gameplay, systems, UI or equivalent.
  • Experience managing and directing cross-discipline teams within video games.
  • Experience developing a creative and technical vision, technical specifications, and feasibility for game systems and features that will be implemented by the team.
  • Experience mentoring other engineers, providing insightful feedback to improve their development efforts.
  • Experience in feature/system management within AAA Game development process.
  • Experience shipping a AAA Game or equivalent experience, working through multiple phases of a development process.
  • Requires proficiency in at least one or more programming languages: Preferably C++ or equivalent.
  • Experienced with scoping, technical documentation, staffing plans, and time estimations.
  • Strong understanding of 3D math (e.g. vector math, physics, animation transforms, etc.)

Compensation:   

  • This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, exempt (salaried) position.
  • The full salary range for this position is $230,000 - $356,000 per year. The upper third of the salary range is typically reserved for existing employees who demonstrate strong performance over time. When an offer is made, many factors are considered, such as your unique experience and skills, where you live, where the work will be performed, what similar jobs pay, internal equity, and what you're looking for. 
  • In addition to base pay, employees in this role may be eligible for additional incentives, such as a sign-on bonus and short- and long-term incentives. Incentive compensation is not guaranteed.
