About the Role
We are building a third-person competitive shooter in Unreal Engine 5 and are seeking a Senior Technical Animator to own our character animation pipeline. The role centers on Maya rigging, custom animation and retargeting tools, and Unreal Engine implementation, supporting both authored and procedural animation. Strong familiarity with matrix-based rigging concepts is required.
Responsibilities
Rigging, Retargeting & Maya Tools
Design, build, and maintain advanced character rigs in Maya for characters and props
Develop and maintain custom animation retargeting tools in Maya that support differing proportions, hierarchies, and rig architectures
Handle IK/FK, space switching, and constraint-driven setups
Create robust, animator-friendly Maya tools using Python (and MEL where appropriate)
Support authored, mocap, and procedural / AI-generated animation (e.g., Motorica, Move.ai)
Optimize rigs and tools for real-time game production
Implement and maintain character animation systems in Unreal Engine 5
Set up and debug:
Animation Blueprints, State Machines, Blend Spaces
IK systems (Control Rig, Full Body IK, etc.)
Integrate Maya-authored animation cleanly into gameplay systems
Debug animation issues related to retargeting, root motion, compression, and runtime blending
Collaborate with engineers to meet performance and scalability goals
Pipeline Ownership & Leadership
Own and evolve the Maya → Unreal animation pipeline
Define technical direction and best practices for rigging, retargeting, and animation systems
Partner with animation, engineering, and design leads to support gameplay goals
Mentor and guide animators and technical artists
Document tools, workflows, and technical standards
Evaluate and integrate new animation technologies
Required Qualifications
5+ years of professional experience in Technical Animation / Rigging for games
Expert-level experience with Maya rigging and animation pipelines
Proven experience building animation retargeting tools in Maya
Strong Python scripting skills
Extensive hands-on experience with Unreal Engine (UE5) animation systems
Strong understanding of real-time animation constraints and optimization
Experience leading or owning character animation pipelines on shipped titles
Nice-to-Have / Bonus Skills
Experience with Motorica, motion matching, or procedural/AI animation systems
Familiarity with matrix-based rigging architectures
Experience with Unreal Control Rig and runtime rigging
Mocap pipeline experience
Knowledge of animation compression, LODs, and performance profiling
Shipped AAA or high-quality indie titles
