What we are looking for:
Striking Distance Studios is looking for a Core Engineer with Multiplayer experience to contribute across a variety of online game features and hardware platforms from desktop to console to help on an unannounced AAA Multiplayer project. There is a strong preference for this role to be onsite in our San Ramon studio.
Responsibilities
- Assist in implementing system-level and gameplay-supporting systems.
- Optimize game code and systems.
- Collaborate with technology director/architect on technical design and feature roll out.
- Work across disciplines in maintenance, optimization, or refactoring of systems and pipelines.
- Coordinate with leads to ensure smooth roll out of new features.
- Create and maintain technical design documents.
- Write clear, maintainable, portable, and highly performant code.
- Adhere to team coding standards and best practices.
- Foster a culture of open, honest, and respectful communication across all disciplines.
- Be responsible for multiplayer gameplay performance – including bandwidth and latency optimizations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in software engineering, computer science, or equivalent.
- At least 3 years of games industry experience and preferably 2 years or more in a similar role.
- At least 1 year of experience with Unreal Engine.
- Experience shipping games on current generation consoles (PS5, XSX, or Switch) and PC.
- Fluent in C/C++.
- Debugging and performance analysis skills.
- Programming experience in multi-threaded or asynchronous workloads.
- Understanding of low-level optimizations and core subsystems, memory management, cross-platform development.
- Strong 3D math skills.
- Experience with technical requirement certification (Sony, Microsoft, etc.) preferred.
- Ability to be self-directed, focused, and detail-oriented.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills.
- A demonstrable love / passion for playing and making video games.
- A highly communicative and collaborative disposition.
- Online service integration experience.
- Strong experience with Client/Server architectures.
- Knowledgeable about network protocols: you understand the messages exchanged during communication over these protocols.
In California, the expected salary range for this position is $110,000-$140,000. The listed expected salary range represents a good faith estimate and the actual pay may depend on a variety of job-related factors that can include experience, education, skills, and location.
