We are currently looking for a Lead Lighting Artist to join our talented team and help drive our AAA projects to success.

As the Lead Lighting Artist, you will be responsible for creating beautiful and engaging lighting setups that enhance the mood and atmosphere within the game world. Working closely with Art and Design leads, you will help define the visual direction and feeling, ensuring consistency across various game environments. Using advanced lighting techniques, tools, and software, you will consistently implement high-quality solutions that elevate the game’s overall visual experience.

KEYRESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and implement interior and exterior lighting setups for realistic 3D environments in a proprietary game engine.
  • Onboard and become adept at the client’s proprietary game engine, pipeline, workflows and tools.
  • Understand any project-specific lighting pipelines, and adopt well established processes.
  • Collaborate with technical artists to author custom shaders and materials which compliment lighting setups within the game engine.
  • Ensure all lighting setups and shaders are optimised for performance requirements without compromising visual quality.
  • Document techniques and best practices to ensure alignment with the overall artistic vision for all stakeholders.
  • Look for opportunities to improve the overall visual look, within the constraints of art direction.
  • Collaborate with level artists, level designers and engineers to propose, implement and optimise your lighting design and setups.
  • Participate in feedback reviews, collaborate with peers and stakeholders and be willing to make required amendments.
  • Work closely with Producers to estimate tasks, and coordinate on deadlines and deliverables.
  • Provide support and aid junior lighting artists to unblock tasks when necessary.
  • Mentor and upskill junior artists over time, and conduct regular sessions to transfer knowledge, provide feedback and highlight best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College Diploma/Degree in graphic design, 3D art, game development or equivalent training.
  • 3-5 years experience as a Lighting Artist, with 5-7 years experience in video game production and shipped at least 2 titles on either AAA, AA and mobile platforms.
  • Expert knowledge of Unreal Engine and/or Unity 3D.
  • Expert knowledge of 3ds Max/Maya/Blender.
  • Good understanding of theories governing physical light, power and colour temperature of different types of artificial and natural light sources.
  • Expert knowledge of the technical constraints relating to real-time 3D engines and level editors.
  • Cinematographic and photographic knowledge: framing, shot scale, scene composition, atmospheric lighting, shadow play, etc.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to delegate work accordingly.
  • Strong portfolio showing real-time lighting skills and demonstrating a keen eye for composition, colour theory, and visual storytelling, including examples of external environments, interior spaces, and dynamic lighting effects.
  • Experience lighting immersive and detailed 3D worlds, relevant to AAA game production and development cycles.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to interpret direction.
  • Highly organised, proactive and autonomous in handling tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to collaborate and work as part of a cross-disciplinary team.
  • Willingness to learn new software programs and tools, as needed by the client or project engagement.
  • Keep up to date with the latest art, design and cultural trends, along with advancements in technology and the games industry.
