Job Summary:
Kuroro.com is seeking a creative, pragmatic, and highly motivated Senior Game Designer with a strong hands-on approach to development within the Unity engine. You are not just an ideator; you are a builder who thrives on bringing concepts to life directly in the engine. You will play a crucial role in designing, implementing, and iterating on core gameplay mechanics and systems, working closely with engineers and artists in a dynamic startup environment where rapid iteration and adaptation are essential.
Responsibilities:
-
Hands-On Design & Implementation: Actively design, prototype, implement, and refine game mechanics, systems, and features directly within the Unity engine.
-
In-Engine Expertise: Utilize built-in Unity tools (like Cinemachine, Timeline, Particle System) and custom tools effectively. Experience creating or working with Behaviour Trees or similar visual scripting/state machine systems is key.
-
Tool Collaboration: Clearly articulate needs and collaborate with the engineering team to request, test, and refine new tools required for efficient design implementation.
-
Balanced Design Philosophy: Generate innovative ideas while consistently evaluating their technical feasibility and alignment with project scope and deadlines ("Can this realistically be built well and on time?").
-
Ruthless Prioritization: Effectively evaluate design choices, distinguishing between 'good' ideas and 'great,' essential features. Confidently make tough decisions to ensure focus on core gameplay and timely delivery.
-
Iterative Development: Embrace a fast-paced, iterative workflow. Quickly adapt designs based on playtesting feedback, technical constraints, and evolving business needs typical of a startup environment.
-
Strong Collaboration: Work closely and effectively with engineers, artists, producers, and other stakeholders to ensure design vision is clearly communicated and successfully executed. We are a startup and communication is key to our culture.
-
Documentation: Create and maintain clear design documentation as needed, but prioritize functional in-engine prototypes.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- Proven experience as a Game Designer with a portfolio showcasing shipped titles or significant contributions, specifically highlighting hands-on implementation work.
-
Strong, practical proficiency with the Unity engine. You must be comfortable working within the editor daily, manipulating components, creating prefabs, and using various subsystems.
- Demonstrable experience using Unity's tools for implementing gameplay (e.g., Behaviour Trees, State Machines, Timeline, visual scripting).
- Excellent understanding of core game design principles, gameplay loops, player motivation, and user experience.
- A pragmatic approach to design, understanding the balance between creative ambition and technical/production realities.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks effectively and make critical decisions under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Experience working in agile, iterative development environments.
- Exceptional collaboration, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Adaptability and a proactive, problem-solving mindset suitable for a fast-paced startup culture.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications & Skills:
- Basic C# scripting ability within Unity (you don't need to be an engineer, but understanding and minor modifications are a plus).
- Experience with Level Design principles and implementation within Unity.
- Experience in a Producer or Project Management role, or familiarity with project management tools (e.g., JIRA, Trello, Asana).
- Interest in or experience with blockchain technology, NFTs, or web3 gaming concepts.
How to Apply:
If you are a hands-on Game Designer who loves building in Unity and thrives in an innovative startup setting, we want to hear from you! Please submit your resume and a portfolio showcasing your relevant game design work. Crucially, please highlight examples demonstrating your hands-on implementation within game engines, particularly Unity.
