We are developing a mixed reality experience for Quest headsets, centered on a sensitive social theme, and we’re seeking an Art Director who can shape a strong, coherent visual identity for the project. You will define the artistic vision, guide style development, and ensure that all visual elements—concepts, environments, UI, and eƯects—work together to create an emotionally resonant and accessible immersive experience. The role is remote-friendly and flexible, with meetings scheduled within New Zealand Standard Time (NZST). Preference will be given to practitioners based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland or Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington.

  • Demonstrated experience as an Art Director or Senior Artist in games, VR/XR/AR/mixed reality or other interactive media.
  • A strong portfolio showcasing visual direction, style development, and concept work.
  • Proven ability to guide a team through ideation, iteration, and refinement.
  • Solid understanding of composition, colour, lighting, and visual storytelling.
  • Familiarity with VR/XR design considerations, or a willingness to rapidly adapt visual approaches for immersive media.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate artistic rationale to both creative and non-creative stakeholders.
  • Experience making art for games and/or interactive experiences.

3. Nice-to-Haves
  • Experience directing art for VR/XR or real-time interactive environments.
  • Knowledge of 3D workflows (Unity, Unreal, Blender, or similar).
  • Experience creating 3D assets either as a character artist or environment artist.
  • Experience with motion graphics or FX pipelines.
  • Interest in social impact storytelling or sensitive subject-matter projects.
  • Experience on a small team where you have to wear multiple hats.

4. Contract Details
  • Freelance/contract role.
  • Flexible, iterative engagement, including style development, review cycles, and production oversight.
  • Remote collaboration supported; in-person sessions optional depending on location.
  • Duration: project-based (current delivery deadline end of December), with potential for extension to future work.

5. Application
  • Portfolio showcasing relevant art direction or conceptual leadership.
  • Resume (CV) showing your relevant work history and skills.
  • Short note describing experience with sensitive themes or collaborative, iterative creative processes.
