About Mad Labs
Mad Labs is a game development studio building and operating games on Roblox, including San Diego Roleplay (SDRP). We're a small team that ships regular updates and works closely across art, design, and development to create worlds players want to spend time in.
About the Role
We're looking for a 3D Environment Artist with a strong eye for composition, atmosphere, and gameplay. Most of this role is hands-on environment design and building in Roblox Studio: turning layouts and references into cohesive, playable spaces, from checkpoints and roads to building interiors, exteriors, and landmarks.
You'll shape terrain, scenes, and bring assets together into finished environments that look good and play well. This is an environment-building role, rather than a position focused solely on creating standalone 3D assets.
What You'll Do
• Build complete environments. Take areas from initial layouts and blockouts through detailed, finished scenes directly in Roblox Studio.
• Shape terrain and atmosphere. Work with smooth terrain, lighting, and materials to create natural landscapes and a consistent visual identity.
• Assemble and dress scenes. Combine team-provided and approved third-party assets, place props and decoration, and identify where custom pieces would add value.
• Design for gameplay. Collaborate with game designers and developers on scale, navigation, sightlines, and spaces that support the intended player experience.
• Test and refine your work. Review environments in-game, respond to playtest and team feedback, and resolve visual or layout issues.
• Keep production organized. Maintain clean project hierarchies and reusable components, communicate progress, and deliver work alongside our two-week update cycles.
What We're Looking For
• Hands-on Roblox Studio experience. You can confidently build and finish environments using Studio, including smooth terrain, lighting, materials, and asset placement.
• A strong portfolio of Roblox environment work. Show complete spaces and scenes, not just isolated props, and clearly identify your contribution to collaborative projects.
• Strong artistic and spatial judgment. You understand composition, scale, color, visual hierarchy, and how players move through a space.
• The ability to work from a brief. You can translate references and design goals into finished environments, take initiative, and adapt to an established art direction.
• Reliable collaboration. You communicate clearly in English, work well with feedback, and manage your time to meet agreed deadlines.
Preferred, Not Required
• Modeling and texturing skills in Blender. Experience creating custom props, architectural pieces, or environment assets; experience with comparable 3D tools is also welcome.
• Roblox optimization knowledge. Familiarity with mesh and texture budgets, asset reuse, collision complexity, streaming, and balancing visual quality with performance across devices.
• Experience shipping or updating a live Roblox game. An understanding of how environment changes fit into ongoing development and release cycles.
• Additional environment-art skills. Concept art, modular building workflows, or environmental storytelling.
