The Company

Lightning Rod Games is a diverse team of experienced game developers with varied backgrounds at companies like EA, Disney, Ubisoft, and UserJoy. Most recently, we created A Fold Apart – a one-of-a-kind puzzle game about a long distance relationship in a world of folding paper. Innovation is at the heart of everything we do and our future titles will continue to break new ground.

The Role

You will become a core part of our technical team working closely with our designers and artists to develop games using the Unity 3D engine.

The work will primarily focus on three things:
  • Tool development: building frameworks so that writers, designers, and artists can be more productive.
  • Feature development: implementing in-game features that meet designer specifications.
  • Prototyping: working with artists and designers to test new game or feature concepts in a quick and dirty manner.
You will work closely with our co-founder, Steven, who will teach you how to approach difficult tasks, organize your work, and architect clean production-level code.

You must be able to gather requirements, do independent research, prepare technical briefings, and implement the results.

Past experience with Unity is required.

The Benefits

This is a paid full-time position with a competitive salary ($58,000 – $65,000). We keep flexible hours (core hours are 10:00am to 4:00pm ET) and are an experienced remote studio (we have been operating as a fully remote studio since 2013). This has proven to be ideal for people with families and young children. Every Friday at 4:00pm is game night where we play games to chat and relax (don’t worry, we don’t care if you’re good at the games, just as long as you have fun). The best part of working at Lightning Rod is the team: people are friendly, humble, and eager to share and learn from each other.

People of all gender identities, races, religions, and ethnicities are encouraged to apply. Part of our commitment to a diverse and inclusive workplace is how we conduct our interviews. The technical portion is take-home and evaluations are anonymized. It allows you to relax and take your time. It also reduces the potential for unconscious bias on our end.

Strong preference will be given to those residing in Ontario. You must be a Canadian resident to apply.

About Our Games – A Fold Apart

Experience both sides of their story as the couple navigates the complexities of (mis)communication and the emotional ups and downs that separation brings. By flipping, folding, and unfolding the paper puzzles in their handcrafted worlds, you can help the couple overcome the emotional barriers of their relationship — but will love endure…?

How to Apply

If you’re interested, we’d love to hear from you! We’ll be collecting resumes until May 20 and conducting interviews starting May 30.
