Job Description
We're currently looking for a full-time Technical Lead to join the SpaceEngine development team. The ideal candidate is someone who is genuinely interested in creating a beautiful universe exploration experience with stunning visuals, built on a fully custom engine.
The selected candidate will be working with the senior developers who have over 30 years of video game development experience combined and a tight-knit engine programming team. The initial focus of the position will be designing, leading, and implementing architectural strategy.
This is a fully remote position, so being able to self-motivate and work with a geographically dispersed team is essential!
Responsibilities
- Define and lead architectural strategy, supporting migration (refactoring) from legacy code to modern programming paradigms.
- Work closely with senior developers to understand current code and come up with effective, efficient, extensible, best-practice architectural designs.
- Work alongside other teams (including operations and management) to ensure requirements and designs align with long-term development goals. This may include communicating with vendors or external contractors.
- Produce and maintain detailed, accurate architecture diagrams and technical designs documents.
- Own, improve, and expand coding and architectural standards.
- Mentor programmers on best practices and remove technical roadblocks as they arise.
- Organize and prioritize work in Jira, assign programmers tasks, and maintain a work pipeline for other programmers.
- Oversee week-to-week work of programmers, ensuring they remain focused and on task, and that deliverables are met in a reasonable time.
- Conduct code reviews with a mind to consistency and adherence to established architectural designs and technical design documents.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software design experience.
- 3+ years in a technical leadership role.
- Formal education in software development, computer science, software architecture, or a related field.
- History of designing, architecting, and shipping software projects, especially games and other interactive media programs.
- Strong ability to write clean, performant, extensible C++ code.
- Familiarity with how software frameworks and engines are built.
- Experience with software refactoring.
- Practical experience writing Python or other scripting languages.
- Can perform static analysis of code and extract architectural elements.
- Can produce software diagrams and technical design documents to convey architectural concepts.
- Ability to make cost-benefit evaluations of work, and software tools and frameworks.
- Ability to justify recommendations to management.
- Familiarity with the entity-component-system (ECS) design pattern and similar extensibility models, especially those used in building games and other interactive media programs.
- Hands-on experience with one or several project/task management methodologies, such as agile, spiral, waterfall, etc.
- Experience with Jira or a similar framework for project/task management.
- Mathematical knowledge and skills, including 3D geometry, trigonometry, etc.
- Fluent in technical English.
- Availability to coordinate and work with teammates between 9:00am - 4:00pm ET.
- A passion for improving and innovating software.
Extra Nice-to-Haves
- Knowledge of OpenGL and Vulkan.
- Knowledge of advanced mathematics, such as multivariable calculus, multivariate statistics, etc.
- Knowledge or interest in astronomy and science.
- Experience teaching or training others.
- Familiarity with implementing Lua, AngelScript, or other in-program scripting languages.
- Experience hiring, mentoring, and growing programming/technical teams, including strong interview and candidate evaluation skills.
Salary: $90,000 - $110,000/year (CAD)
